Traveling Light
Traveling light is an art, but selecting the right gear can help you accomplish it quickly. Try to select the smallest and lightest version of the items you take on your trip. This will reduce the weight and size of your luggage. Pack everything you need to have a comfortable, and enjoyable trip, while leaving behind unnecessary items. With subsequent trips, scrutinize the items that your previously took, and determine if that item was really necessary, or if there is a smaller or lighter version of that item. Experienced travelers know that the lighter their luggage, the more they enjoy their experience. Read our article on Traveling Light for more information.
Travel Packs
Traditional Hard Sided Luggage is heavy, difficult to carry, and a challenge to stow away. I prefer soft sided duffel bags, or a backpack (a rucksack for our friends in Europe). I have several different size climbing backpacks that I use for travel backpacks. They are made of a more durable material, and have multiple lash points for attaching additional items. Some people prefer panel loading backpacks, but the packs I use are all top loading. Read our article on Travel Packs for more information.
Travel Clothing
Selecting the proper clothing will help you with Packing light and Traveling light. Clothing made from merino wool is excelent for travel. It is lightweight, keeps you cool when it is warm out, warm when it is cool out. It naturally resists odor allowing you to wear the same shirt for several days without it stinking. Merino clothing is great as a layering system. In cooler conditions you can easily layer a merino shirt over another merino shirt. Travel Footwear
For adventurous travel, you will probably need to have more than one pair of shoes. For warmer weather trips we suggest you take at least one pair of lightweight sandals or flip flops in addition to your walking shoes. They are great for travel days, where most of the time you are sitting on a plane or bus seat. Having an extra pair of shoes allows my primary walking shoes to dry out/air out. Flip flops are a good option because they are lightweight, and don't take up valuable space in my backpack. For walking shoes we suggest a lightweight trail running shoe. They are durable, and have excellent traction. Read our article on Travel Footwear for more information.
